How to Make Resin Coasters

Creating resin coasters can be a fun and creative DIY project. Resin coasters are made by pouring epoxy resin into molds and adding various decorative elements. With the basic materials for a resin coaster being a mold and resin, what you add for decoration is up to you. Anything from glitter to small sea shells can be used as long as it can be submerged in resin. Here’s a basic guide to help you get started making resin coasters:

Materials

Instructions:

  1. Prepare Your Workspace: Set up a well-ventilated and clean workspace. Cover the area with a silicone pad, old newspaper, disposable table cover, or plastic sheet to protect surfaces from resin spills.
  2. Wear Protective Gear: Put on nitrile gloves and any other protective gear to avoid direct contact with the resin. If you are trying to protect your clothes, I would recommend wearing an apron for this craft.
  3. Mix the Resin: Follow the instructions on the epoxy resin kit to mix the resin and hardener in the specified ratio. Usually, this involves mixing equal parts of resin and hardener. Stir thoroughly but gently to avoid introducing air bubbles.
  4. Color the Resin (Optional): If you want colored coasters, you can add mica powder, pigments, dyes, or alcohol inks to the resin and mix until you achieve the desired color.
  5. Pour Resin into Molds: Place the silicone coaster molds on a level surface. Pour the mixed resin into the molds. Fill each mold to the desired thickness, leaving a little space at the top.
  6. Add Decorative Elements: Drop in dried flowers, glitter, or other small decorative items into the resin. Arrange them as you like. You can even use clear stickers like we used for the resin keychains here:
  7. Eliminate Bubbles: Use a lighter, heat gun, or a torch on a low setting to remove any air bubbles that may have formed in the resin. Hold the heat source a few inches above the resin and move it around gently until the bubbles pop.
  8. Allow Curing: Follow the resin kit instructions for curing time. Usually, it takes around 24 to 48 hours for the resin to fully cure. Place the molds in a dust-free area to cure undisturbed.
  9. Demold the Coasters: Once the resin is fully cured, gently flex the silicone molds to release the coasters. If you’re having trouble demolding, you can use a resin release spray to make it easier.
  10. Finishing Touches: If the edges of the coasters are uneven or have rough spots, you can sand them lightly with sandpaper of varying grits to achieve a smooth finish.
  11. Protective Coating (Optional): If desired, you can apply a clear protective coating of resin over the top of the coasters for extra durability and shine. Follow the same mixing and pouring process as before.

Remember that working with epoxy resin requires careful measurement and attention to detail. Be patient and follow the manufacturer’s instructions closely to achieve the best results.

What Materials Can Be Used in Resin?

Resin is a versatile material that can be used to create a wide range of projects, from art pieces and jewelry to functional items like coasters and tabletops. When working with resin, you can incorporate various materials to achieve different effects and looks. Here are some materials that can be used in resin projects:

  1. Pigments and Dyes: Pigments and liquid dyes are commonly used to color resin. They come in various colors and can be mixed into the resin to achieve the desired hue.
  2. Glitters and Sequins: Glitter and sequins can be added to resin to create a sparkling or shimmering effect. They can be suspended in the resin to add visual interest.
  3. Inclusions and Embedments: Small objects like dried flowers, leaves, shells, beads, and other trinkets can be embedded into the resin to create unique and personalized pieces.
  4. Alcohol Inks: Alcohol inks are vibrant and colorful liquid dyes that can be added to resin to create abstract patterns and designs.
  5. Mica Powders: Mica powders come in metallic and iridescent colors and can be mixed into resin to create a lustrous effect.
  6. Wood: Wood pieces, such as thin slices or wood shavings, can be embedded in resin to create interesting textures and contrasts.
  7. Metallic Foils: Metallic foils or leafing can be applied to the surface of resin to create metallic accents and highlights.
  8. Crystals and Gemstones: Small crystals, gemstones, or rhinestones can be added to resin to create a touch of sparkle and elegance.
  9. Tints and Transparent Layers: Translucent materials like tissue paper, thin fabric, or even photos can be incorporated between layers of resin to create a unique visual effect.
  10. Liquid Silicone: Silicone molds and silicone additives can be used to create molds for resin casting or to create flexible and soft elements within resin pieces.
  11. Resin Dyes: Specifically designed dyes for resin can be used to achieve consistent and vibrant colors.
  12. Metal Powders: Metal powders like bronze, copper, or aluminum can be mixed with resin to create metallic finishes and textures.
  13. Clay: Polymer clay or air-dry clay can be sculpted and added to resin projects to create three-dimensional elements.
  14. Natural Elements: Leaves, feathers, and other natural elements can be preserved in resin to create organic and visually interesting pieces.

It’s important to note that when adding materials to resin, especially organic or porous materials, they should be thoroughly dried and sealed to prevent air bubbles and potential reactions with the resin. Additionally, always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the resin product you are using and conduct any necessary tests before starting a project.
