Materials:

  • UV Resin
  • UV Light
  • Stud Earring Mold

  • Stir Stick
  • Gloves
  • Protective Goggles
  • Grill lighter

Optional:

  • Silicone work mat

Instructions:

  1. Put on your gloves and goggles and set up your work area.
  2. After setting up, add glitter and some of your UV resin to a small mixing cup and mix together with a stir stick.
  3. Pour some of the glitter/ resin mixture into your molds. I like to do this with the tip of the stir stick since the glitter makes the mixture thick and un-pourable.

  1. Once you have some of the mixture in the mold, tap the mold onto your work surface to bring bubbles to the surface and level the resin.
  2. If you have surface bubbles, light your grill lighter and wave it gently back and forth over the top of the mold. Be careful not to hold the flame in one place for too long as it can burn your resin.
  3. Place your UV lamp over the resin in the mold and cure it according to your resin’s instructions. Mine required a couple of minutes.

  1. Flip over your mold and cure once more from the underside.
  2. Once cured, add a drop of your UV resin to what will be the back of your earring, then add an earring post. When you have it placed correctly, cure it with the UV lamp. This will work like glue to hold your post in place.
  3. Remove the earrings from the molds. If they feel tacky at all, you can place them back under the UV lamp for further curing.

  1. Pour some of the glitter/ resin mixture into your molds. I like to do this with the tip of the stir stick since the glitter makes the mixture thick and un-pourable.
  2. Once you have some of the mixture in the mold, tap the mold onto your work surface to bring bubbles to the surface and level the resin. I also used pointed tweezers to pop any bubbles along the edges.
  3. If you have surface bubbles, light your grill lighter and wave it gently back and forth over the top of the mold. Be careful not to hold the flame in one place for too long as it can burn your resin.

  1. Set your earring mold somewhere warm to cure. Your resin packaging should have instructions on temperatures and times for curing.
  2. After your earrings have cured, remove them from the molds. Place them face down on your work surface.
  3. Squeeze a small amount of the E6000 glue onto the post it note.
  4. Take one of your earring posts and place the flat in into the glue and then stick it to the back of one of your earrings. Repeat this for the rest of the earrings.
  5. Allow the glue to cure according to package directions. (Mine was strong and bonded after just a couple of hours.)

Though 2 part epoxy resin when it cures is beautiful, you need to be careful when using it for jewelry making. Be sure to read the instructions carefully and pay close attention to your mixing time and your work space temperatures to insure proper curing. There is nothing worse than putting in a lot of effort, and your project come out rubbery. When done correctly, it really makes a wonderful finished product.
